Most people are unaware of what conventional tampons are made of. Even though they all use cotton as a main ingredient, they also contain a whole host of other toxic materials including plastic, rayon, dioxins and polyethylene among others. Some of these ingredients even have carcinogenic effects. This is all very alarming when one considers that the vagina is one of the most chemically absorbent places in the body. These tampons are also known to shed fibers that can remain inside the body, attracting bacteria and increasing the chances for infection.
Back in the early 1980s, there was a series of incidents in which almost 1000 women were diagnosed with tampon-related Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), 40 of whom died. The tampons the women were using were designed to be highly absorbent, but ended up being extremely toxic as a result of some of the ingredients. Most of the tampons in question were pulled from the market, but the problem still remains on a smaller scale. There are still cases of tampon-related TSS that occur every year.
In light of all this negativity, we are pleased to introduce a line of feminine hygiene products from Emerita that are made with 100% organic cotton. Their products are free of pesticides, dioxins, chlorine, rayon and all the other aforementioned toxins. They are also fragrance-free and exhibit minimal fiber loss, meaning there is less chance for infection from shed fibers. The cotton is soft and irritation-free. These products are available as tampons, panty liners and pads. They come in different sizes and different levels of absorption. They offer all the options that a conventional feminine hygiene line would have.
Why aren’t all tampons made this way? We don’t know.
