Enhance Heart Health

< 1 min read

You probably know your cholesterol level. You may even know your ratio of LDL to HDL. But do you know how much of your LDL and HDL is oxidized? Most likely not. Yet oxidized HDL is  unable to perform its vital mission of removing cholesterol from the arterial wall and oxidized LDL has been shown to result in severe arterial damage and contributes to the entire process of atherosclerosis. Fortunately there are natural substances with strong protective antioxidant properties.

Perhaps no other nutrient has demonstrated better anti-LDL oxidation effects than pomegranate. In a clinical study, human subjects taking pomegranate showed a remarkable 90% reduction in the LDL basal oxidation state. Pomegranate also helps increase the enzyme paraoxonase-1, an enzyme strongly associated with the anti-atherosclerosis function of HDL. In a study eight ounces of pomegranate juice a day increased paraoxonase-1 levels 83% after one year.

There are standardized pomegranate supplements that provide the active constituents shown to reduce LDL oxidation and increase HDL protective paraoxonase-1. Another one of pomegranates many vascular effects is its ability to increase endothelial nitric oxide. By virtue of its effects in restoring nitric oxide, pomegranate may help combat endothelial dysfunction-the leading cause of atherosclerosis.   Taking 400-500 mg of a standardized pomegranate supplement provides the same active constituents of eight ounces of pomegranate juice a day without all the added sugar.
