Boil Water Advisory: How to Make Sure Your Water is Clean During Advisories

2 min read

A couple weeks ago there was a water boil advisory in Atlanta, which left us here at Peach Vitamins very glad we had an Ecoflo Pitcher in our office!

The whole ordeal got us thinking, what exactly happens when they issue a water advisory? What are we at risk of being exposed to? Also, do we even need to boil our water if we have a bacteria-filtering Ecoflo pitcher?

Why are water advisories issued?

Water advisories are issued for different reasons. It can be issued because a water source was turned off, water pressure was lost, or water treatment was disrupted. In the case of Atlanta’s water advisory the last weekend of April 2016, a power outage caused a temporary loss of pressure in the drinking water system. A water advisory is issued any time there is a chance the water was contaminated with bacteria, even if the risk is very low.

Does a water advisory mean my water is definitely contaminated?

No, not necessarily. The water management authorities issue a warning and should also inform citizens why the advisory is being issued, but it is not always because bacteria have been found in the water system. It is often just a precautionary measure in case water was contaminated.

How do I make sure my water is safe during a water contamination or advisory?

During the city of Atlanta’s recent advisory period, the Department of Watershed Management instructed people in affected areas to “boil water for 1 minute past a rolling boil before using it for cooking, drinking or brushing teeth. Infants, the elderly and those with immune deficiencies should be particularly careful.” Our natural health experts at Peach Vitamins recommend boiling the water for 1 minute at a rolling boil, letting it cool completely, then letting the water pass through an Ecoflo Water Pitcher to complete the cleansing process.

What does boiling water do?

Boiling water kills bacteria that may be present in the water.

Why should I filter water in addition to boiling it?

Boiling the water kills bacteria, but does not remove other toxins like lead, mercury, chlorine, chloroform, and more. By passing water through the filter, you not only remove 99% of the cryptosporidium, giardia, and other bacteria in the water, you also remove tons of pollutants that will remain in the water after boiling.

What does the Ecoflo Filter remove from water?

The full list of contaminants removed from the water is available on the Ecoflo website here. You can purchase a pitcher here or purchase a to-go filter bottle here.
